Guerrazzi wrote this historical novel in 1854 based on events in the Cenci family in the late 1590s. Beatrice Cenci was a young noble lady in Italy, according to the fifteenth edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica, copyright 1975. In the novel, Beatrice was true to the moral compass she developed as a Catholic. Unfortunately, her father and the Pope were unethical. Count Cenci was in a competition with Lucifer for murderous cruelty. The Pope was greedy and coveted the Cenci lands and gold.Guerrazzi redeems Beatrice and others in the household, describing their goodness in the presence of the unspeakable evil of Count Cenci. The Cenci family lived in Rome. When the Count was killed, members of the Catholic Church saw an opportunity to acquire great wealth. The second half of the book describes the ordeals of the remaining family members. If one likes the novels of George Sand or Emile Gaboriau, then this book will be worth reading.
