I was skeptical when I ordered this book, but I'm so glad I did! I had tried several times before, without success, to find and identify the constellations according to book illustrations and guidance. Since the cost was very reasonable, I decided to try just once more.Success! Unlike anything I've read before, this book gives you a much better likelihood of finding what you're searching for by breaking the task down for you by season. It's a simple and sensible approach for comprehending such a vast subject. The stories are delightful, the illustrations nicely done and helpful. If you've had trouble in the past finding the constellations, you'll really appreciate this book.

I have to admit I know both the author and the artist, so I am biased. With Elaine's exquisite artwork and Rob's impressive knowledge of Greek mythology as well as of astronomy, this is a book to keep on your bookshelf and to gift to others.
I learned to identify the Big Dipper, Draco the Dragon, and Cassiopeia decades ago at my mother's side, gazing into the suburban night sky. Recently, I decided to get serious about it again and see if I couldn't spot all twenty-six of the major constellations over the course of a year. Easier said than done! Even with H.A. Rey's classic "The Stars" in hand, it's been very challenging, to say the least. Well, with "Tales in the Night Sky," Rob and Elaine Drew have simplified the process, much as the ambient light in suburbia "simplifies" what we can actually see in the night sky. In a charming and helpful book, they lead you through the seasons with delightful stories and illustrations of the characters behind the constellations. And they don't leave out the technical details star charts, astronomical facts and figures, a glossary - it's all there in this slim volume. In fact, I'm counting on their guidance to help me find Draco the Dragon again (I have to believe he's become harder to see as our suburban skies have become brighter!). And don't miss their "Turning on the Stars", a wonderful game to show off your new-found skills!
The magic trick in "Tales in the Night Sky" is the happy alliance between astronomy, mythology, and the remarkable illustrations. When I started reading, I couldn't wait until dark to check whether, I too, could recognize the patterns of the described and skillfully illustrated constellations.
The book is well structured and a shining example of clarity! At the same time, the author relates in an entertaining, conversational style to the reader the illustrious and infamous mythological personages (and creatures), connects them to their namesakes in the night sky, and points out where to look for them. The enticing illustrations of the stars and their positions, is an additional, foolproof way to find them.
While reading (and hoping for a cloudless night sky), I experienced some unexpected interesting side benefits. The well-written, succinct stories of the mythological figures instantly re-ignited my interest in their underlying plots and interrelationships. I was eager to find out why Perseus wanted to impress the King of Seriphos by bringing him the head of the King's worst enemy, the Gorgon. And what an exciting story I found underneath the story that instigated my interest!
Although not only for junior stargazers, but a delight for all ages, the book seems especially valuable for young children, since all the fields you meet in the book, astronomy, mythology, and drawing/arts, spark the imagination.
That is how I experienced this book.
Constellation guides are my go-to gift for children of a certain age (maybe 8-12) but I've never had much success until now in finding a fabulous guide. Maybe that's because constellations were always a frustration for me. It always seemed as though it should be easy to find them yet beyond Orion's belt and the big dipper I've never had much success.
Then a friend gave me a copy of Tales in the Night Sky - A Story Telling Guide for Star Gazers (great title!).
Since I live in a city and the book is written for suburbanites I thought I'd read through the book before venturing out at night to star gaze.
After just a few pages I found years of confusion melting away with Rob Drew's simple but not simplistic explanations. Ah! So it is "star pictures" also called "asterisms" that are easy to identify- not the entire constellation. And by focusing on the stories, which are retold in a humorous engaging style, Drew leads us away from a science class sensibility to the domain of storytelling and poetry. But then, he also peppers the book with fairly high intensity astronomy facts such as explaining what an "emission nebula" is. These factoids are found in text boxes labeled "Impress Your Friends."
The illustrations by Elaine Drew capture the mystery of the night sky and the archaic feeling of the mythological stories while simultaneously being crystal clear in informing you where on each animal, deity or object you will find the necessary star to connect the dots for the star picture.
On the last night of September I ventured from my home in San Francisco into my back yard armed with Tales in the NIght Sky and a flashlight. I saw 2 or 3 stars, a lot of fog and then whoosh! the automatic sprinkler system turned on and I had to run inside. But not before appreciating the rich night air and realizing that I had not ventured into my back yard at night in years. That alone was a gift of the book.
The next night I ventured out again. This time I saw 2 or 3 stars and then automatic lights went on from neighboring houses making star gazing impossible. I realized I would need to star gaze elsewhere.
So stay tuned for an addition to this review when I head to the suburbs or beyond to try out the "What to look for in the sky" instructions.
Meanwhile, for simplicity, clarity and awe I highly recommend "Tales in the Night Sky."
