Alexander Grzelachowski is best remembered by historians as the Puerto de Luna merchant who served Billy the Kid his last Christmas dinner on December 25, 1880. The young outlaw was being transported to jail in Las Vegas by Lincoln county Sheriff Pat Garrett. Grzelachowski immigrated to the United States as a Catholic priest in 1847. After serving for a brief period as a priest in Ohio he accompanied Jean Baptiste Lamy to New Mexico in 1851. He served as a priest in several parishes. In 1862 he joined the New Mexico Volunteers as a chaplain. He played a very importrant role in the destruction of the Confederatee supply train in the Battle of Glorieta Pass. He successfully guided Union forces back to safety through treacherous terrain after the raid on the supply train. After the loss of the supplies the Confederate soldiers were forced to retreat from New Mexico back to Texas. Shortly after his service as a chaplain, Grzelachowski left the priesthood and went into the mercantile business in Las Vegas. He started a family in 1870 and by 1872 he had moved to Puerto de Luna, where he opened a mercantile store. His Puerto de Luna store was visited several times by Billy the Kid. Grzelachowski had instructed the store clerks to allow the young outlaw to take whatever supplies he needed without interference. The outlaw was also known to have attended dances hosted by Grzelachowski. Grzelachowski was very active in civil affairs in San Miguel county and Puerto de Luna. He was one of the leaders from Puerto de Luna who played an influential role in lobbying the territorial legislature for the creation of a new Guadalupe county out of the southern part of San Miguel county in 1891. The county was oficially created in 1893 and Grzelachowski served as the new county's first probate judge. And as a San Miguel county justice of the peace he swore in the three new commissioners for Guadalupe county. The swearing in ceremony is believed to have take place in the office of his mercantile store. He had served as a justice of the peace for Puerto de Luna in the old San Miguel county. He was also the postmaster for Puerto de Luna and operated the post office out of his mercantile store. He was engaged in ranching and raised sheep, cattle and horses. Billy the Kid is known to have rustled horses from one Grzelachowski's ranches. He had a large orchard on his Puerto de Luna estate and also operated a large vineyard. Grzelachowski died in 1896 of injuries suffered when he was thrown from the wagon he was riding on the way to his Alamo Gordo ranch.
